The juxtaposition of Jackie Nickerson’s photographs of African agricultural workers against 18th century Old Master paintings in Dublin’s National Gallery of Ireland was intended to stimulate a reaction in the viewers who walked through it earlier this year. Well, here is one outcome that the curators could surely never have predicted: Simone Rocha’s Spring fashion show, held in the aisle of the splendid gothic Southwark Cathedral in London. “There was a photo of someone wrapped in white plastic working in a field next to a painting of Irish girls—that did it,” said Rocha, after the last models had filed past the gilded altar.
